The Who, What, When, Where, How of Styling

In styling composition, think of who, what, when, where, how as fabric/texture, color, shape and scale. These are concepts that define the total look and lead the eye in a meaningful way.

When something is feeling off, if you make an adjustment to any one of these concepts, you will find that tiny shift will help to balance the full look.

This is particularly important in all black looks. I know a lot of us rely on all black for instant sophistication, seriousness and garanimals-esque ease in styling- but without elements of texture, contrast color and/or shapes created in the profile, this tonal idea comes off flat.

In this look, I’m identifying at least 5 ways that these elements are impacting the composition of this look.

Cap: Color & Texture from the embroidered script

Bag: Texture from the leather weave

Shoe: Color & Texture from the net fabric

Skirt: Texture (shine) from the fabric & shape from the length
