How to Prepare for your Closet Edit & Assessment Appointment

Booking a closet edit is equal parts terrifyingly exposé and completely freeing! I describe the Closet Edit & Assessment to be the crucial first step in Personal Styling because I take cues from your existing wardrobe to understand your styling history and the style you are trying to achieve today.

In order to make this a streamlined process, here are 5 tips on how to prepare for our appointment.

  1. If there are pieces that you feel are off-limits, please put them aside or assign them a safe space. I will respect those boundaries.

  2. It can be tempting to do a pre-edit, I know! If you feel compelled to do your own edit before our appointment, focus on removing damaged pieces (ie stained or broken) or clothes that no longer fit (ie pieces that don’t close or gap at the bust). Resist the urge to edit for style!

  3. Get ready to talk to me about what’s in there! The first 30 minutes of the appointment we will be talking through the contents of your wardrobe- I’m going to want to know what your favorite pieces are, what you wear on a regular basis (they may be the same or different!), something you own that you love but doesn’t get enough wear, something that you felt like was a mistake buying. Remember that everything is new to me- so your POV is really going to help me determine what your key styles are (and will be).

  4. The most successful edit is done between you and I. I’m sure you have friends and family that you rely on from time to time for fashion advice, but this exercise is meant to dig deep into who YOU are. I work hard to build a trusting relationship with my clients so they can be totally honest with themselves in the styling process, so please, do not invite friends or family to join this appointment.

  5. Make sure everything is accounted for! If you have pieces at the Dry Cleaners or you are lending pieces, try to get them back in for our appointment. Let’s give everything a fair chance!

It’s going to be an adjustment to see your wardrobe in new form but the work we do in an edit is meant to clarify your Styling Intent. It can be an emotional experience- we hold a lot of memories in our wardrobe- so I’ll be here to support you in this process.
